Why Did We Need Christmas Anyway? (1 Peter 3:17-18)

Why Did We Need Christmas Anyway? –1 Peter 3:17-18

1 Peter 1:10 (NASB) As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries,

1 Peter 1:11 (NASB) seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.

1 Peter 1:12 (NASB) It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.

John 20:5 and stooping and looking in, he saw* the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in.

Matthew 26:53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

“HE WAS LED AS A SHEEP TO SLAUGHTER; AND AS A LAMB BEFORE ITS SHEARER IS SILENT, SO HE DOES NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH.

1 Corinthians 4:9 we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men.

Ephesians 3:10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places.

I. WE NEEDED CHRISTMAS BECAUSE OF THE SUFFERING OF THE CROSS

a. Christ suffered in His soul

1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Luke 2:33-35 (NASB) 33 And His father and mother were amazed at the things which were being said about Him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed— 35 and a sword will pierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

Luke 2:49 Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?”

John 12:27 “Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.

John 18:37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world

Matthew 26:38 Then He *said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death;

Hebrews 5:7 In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety.

Luke 22:42 “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

Luke 22:44 And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

b. Christ suffered in His body

Matthew 26:67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him,

Luke 22:64 and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, “Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?”

Matthew 27:1 Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death;

Matthew 27:11-14 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.” (12) And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. (13) Then Pilate *said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” (14) And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed.

Matthew 27:26 Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

c. Christ suffered in his Spirit

Matthew 26:56 Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

Luke 23:39 One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!”

Matthew 27:40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”

Mark 15:31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself.

Matthew 27:45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour.

Mark 15:34 At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” which is translated, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”

Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Luke 23:34 “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”

II. WE NEEDED CHRISTMAS BECAUSE OF THE SUBSTITUTION OF THE CROSS

a. Christ died as a sinless person

John 10:14 “I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, (15) even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. (17) “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. (18) “No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again

b. Christ’s death was substitutionary

III.  WE NEEDED CHRISTMAS BECAUSE OF THE SUFFICIENCY OF THE CROSS

a. The cross was sufficient for all time

b. The cross was sufficient for all people

Romans 3:10 as it is written, “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

c. The cross is sufficient to bring us to God

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
