What We Should Know About Angels? (Hebrews 1:14)

Hebrews 13:2 (NASB) Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.

I. THE DANGERS OF TOO MUCH ANGEL FASCINATION

a. Satan has used angels for his work before

b. It signifies a greater openness to spirituality

2 Corinthians 11:14 No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

II. THE DEFINITION OF ANGELS

a. Angel

b. Sons of God

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.

Job 38:6-7 “On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone, 7 When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

c. Holy Ones

Psalms 89:5-7 The heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. (7) A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, And awesome above all those who are around Him?

d. Host

Psalms 89:6-8 For who in the skies is comparable to the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the LORD, (8) O LORD God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.

1 Samuel 17:45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.

e. Ministers

Hebrews 1:7 And of the angels He says, “WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS WINDS, AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE.”

Psalms 104:4 He makes the winds His messengers, Flaming fire His ministers.

f. Chariots

2 Kings 6:16-17 So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” (17) Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

Psalms 68:17 The chariots of God are myriads, thousands upon thousands; The Lord is among them as at Sinai, in holiness.

g. Watchers

Daniel 4:17 (NASB) “This sentence is by the decree of the angelic watchers And the decision is a command of the holy ones, In order that the living may know That the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind, And bestows it on whom He wishes And sets over it the lowliest of men.”

h. Sons of the mighty

Psalms 29:1 1 Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of the mighty, Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

i. Stars

Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

III. THE ORIGIN OF ANGELS

a. Their Original Creation

  1. They were created distinct from humans

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things have been created through Him and for Him.

Psalms 148:2-5 Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts! (3) Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all stars of light! (4) Praise Him, highest heavens, And the waters that are above the heavens! (5) Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were created.

2. They were created as a fixed number

Colossians 1:16 (NASB) 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

3. The time of their creation was before God created the earth

Job 38:4-7 (NASB) 4 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding, 5 Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the line on it? 6 “On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone, 7 When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

4. Their number is great

Hebrews 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels,

Psalms 68:17 The chariots of God are myriads, thousands upon thousands; The Lord is among them as at Sinai, in holiness.

Daniel 7:10 “A river of fire was flowing And coming out from before Him; Thousands upon thousands were attending Him, And myriads upon myriads were standing before Him; The court sat, And the books were opened.

Revelation 5:11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands,

5. Their ultimate purpose was to glorify God

b. Their Original Condition

  1. They were created good and holy

Genesis 1:31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Genesis 2:3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

2. They were made holy beings in a holy environment

Luke 10:18 And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.

Isaiah 14:12 “How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations!

3. Angels were created to glorify Jesus Christ

Hebrews 1:6 And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, “AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM.”

Revelation 4:11 “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”

c. Their State as Creatures

  1. Angels have certain limitations

a. They have limitations of space

b. They have limitations of Power

c. They have limitations of intellect

Matthew 24:36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

1 Peter 1:11-12 (NASB) 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.

d. They had limitations of Holiness

Isaiah 14:12 “How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations!

Revelation 12:3-4 Then another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven diadems. (4) And his tail *swept away a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child.

2. Angels are morally answerable to God

Matthew 25:41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;

John 16:11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

1 Corinthians 6:3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life?

Jude 1:6 And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day,

IV. THE PROPERTIES OF ANGELS

a. Angels are spirit beings

Hebrews 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?

b. Angels can appear in different ways

Colossians 1:16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

  1. They have appeared in dreams

Matthew 1:20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

2. They have appeared in visions

Isaiah 6:1-3 In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. (2) Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. (3) And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.”

3. They have been seen by supernatural vision

2 Kings 6:17 Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

4. They can be seen by natural sight

Daniel 8:15-17 When I, Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it; and behold, standing before me was one who looked like a man. (16) And I heard the voice of a man between the banks of Ulai, and he called out and said, “Gabriel, give this man an understanding of the vision.” (17) So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; but he said to me, “Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end.”

Matthew 28:1-3 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. (2) And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. (3) And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.

c. Angels can appear in different forms

  1. They generally appear as men
  2. Some angels appear younger than other angels

Mark 16:5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed.

3. They can appear in any number

Luke 1:26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth,

Acts 1:10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them.

4. Sometimes they appear with wings

1 Timothy 4:1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,
