d. The basis for unity is love

e. A basis for family unity is diligent preservation

II. THE REASON THERE CAN BE UNITY

a. Unity exists only when there is oneness

1. There is oneness through the body

Ephesians 1:22-23 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

John 17:21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

Romans 12:5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

2. There is oneness through the Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place.

3. There is oneness through our hope

1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

1 Peter 3:15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

Ephesians 1:18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

4. There is oneness through our Lord

Colossians 1:18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

1 Corinthians 12:5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.

5. There is oneness through our faith

6. There is oneness through our baptism

7. We have oneness through God the Father

III. THE PRESERVATION OF UNITY THROUGH DIVERSITY

Psalms 68:18 You have ascended on high, You have led captive Your captives; You have received gifts among men, Even among the rebellious also, that the Lord God may dwell there.

IV. DIVERSITY OF GIFTS LEADS TO FAMILY UNITY

Application

1. The function of the pastor-teacher is to equip people for the ministry.

2. The goal of our teaching should be maturity, growth and unity.

3. The church will grow when we fellowship and are unified.

4. The work of the saints is to do the work of the ministry.

“A non-ministering Christian is a contradiction in terms.” – D. Elton Trueblood
