The Purpose of The Church GBC Vision and Mission – Matthew 28:18-20

Our Vision Our vision is to glorify God by reaching out to individuals and families in New England for Christ and teach them to serve Him. Our Mission Our mission is to help people say “yes” to God and become faithful followers of Jesus Christ by: 1) helping each believer realize that he/she has been given spiritual gifts to serve the Lord and His people; and 2) using worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism, to move people from their present spiritual condition to mature believers of Christ. Moving people from their present spiritual condition to mature believers of Christ. Our Vision Our vision is to glorify God by reaching out to individuals and families in New England for Christ and teach them to serve Him.

I. THE VOCATION VISION OF THE CHURCH

a. We are to glorify God

Ephesians 1:5-6 (NASB) 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

Ephesians 1:11-12 (NASB) 11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, 12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory.

1 Corinthians 10:31 (NASB) Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Colossians 3:17 (NASB) Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

b. We are to reach out for Christ

Matthew 28:19-20 (NASB) 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Acts 1:8 (NASB) but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

Colossians 4:3 (NASB) praying at the same time for us as well, that God will open up to us a door for the word, so that we may speak forth the mystery of Christ, for which I have also been imprisoned;

c. We are to equip the saints

Ephesians 4:11-16 (NASB) 11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. 14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.

II. THE FUNCTION MISSION OF THE CHURCH

Our Mission Our mission is to help people say “yes” to God and become faithful followers of Jesus Christ by: 1) helping each believer realize that he/she has been given spiritual gifts to serve the Lord and His people; and 2) using worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism, to move people from their present spiritual condition to mature believers of Christ.

a. We desire the salvation of the lost

1 Timothy 2:3-4 (NASB) 3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

b. We yearn for the growth of the saved

1. Believers grow by using their spiritual gifts

1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (NASB) 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

1 Corinthians 12:14 (NASB) For the body is not one member, but many.

1 Peter 4:10-11 (NASB) 10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

2. Believers grow by serving the Lord

3. Believers grow by worshipping correctly

Hebrews 13:15 (NASB) Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.

Colossians 1:12 (NASB) giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.

Colossians 3:15-17 (NASB) 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Acts 16:25 (NASB) But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;

1 Corinthians 14:26 (NASB) What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

Ephesians 5:19 (NASB) speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;

Colossians 3:16 (NASB) Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

4. Believers grow by fellowshipping regularly

Hebrews 10:24-25 (NASB) 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

Philippians 2:4 (NASB) do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

1 Thessalonians 5:14 (NASB) We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

Titus 3:14 (NASB) Our people must also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.

5. Believers grow by participating in discipleship

i. 100% more likely to be involved in discipleship

ii.. 57% more likely to participate in adult Sunday

iii. 54% more likely to participate in a small group

iv. 46% more likely to disciple others

6. Believers grow by being involved in ministry

7. Believers grow by evangelizing the lost

Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
