I.  THE PREEXISTENCE OF THE PRE-INCARNATE

a. The meaning of preexistence

1. Christ existed before His birth

2. There was never a time that He did not exist

b. The importance of preexistence

1. If He is not preexistent then there is no Trinity

2. If He is not preexistent then He is not God

3. If He is not preexistent then He is a liar

c. The evidences for preexistence

1. Scripture teaches His preexistence and heavenly origin.

John 3:13 (NASB) “No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.

John 3:31 (NASB) “He who comes from above is above all, he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

2. Scripture teaches His preexistence as he was creator

John 1:3 (NASB) All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

Colossians 1:16 (NASB) For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

Hebrews 1:2 (NASB) in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

3. Scripture teaches His preexistence in His relationship to God

John 10:30 (NASB) “I and the Father are one.”

John 17:5 (NASB) “Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

John 16:27 (NASB) for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father.

4. Scripture teaches His preexistence in His relationship to John the Baptist

John 1:15 (NASB) John testified* about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ “

John 1:30 (NASB) “This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.

II. THE ETERNALITY OF THE PRE-INCARNATE CHRIST

a. The meaning of eternality

1. Christ existed before His birth

2. Christ existed before creation

John 3:16 (NASB) 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

b. The importance of eternality

1. If He is not eternal then there is no Trinity

2. If He is not eternal then He is not God

3. If He is not eternal then He is a liar

c. The evidences for eternality

1. Evidence from John 1

John 1:1 (NASB) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1 In the beginning the Word was continually existing, and the Word was continually existing with God, and the Word was continually existing as God

2. Evidence from John 8

John 8:58 (NASB) Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

Exodus 3:13-14 (NASB) 13 Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?”14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ “

John 8:58 (NASB) Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

John 8:59 (NASB) 59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him

John 10:30-33 (NASB) 30 “I and the Father are one.” 31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” 33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.”

3. Evidence from Hebrews 1

Hebrews 1:8 (NASB) But of the Son He says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, And the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom.

4. Evidence from Micah 5

Micah 5:2 (NASB) “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.”

Matthew 2:5 (NASB) 5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet:

Habakkuk 1:12 (NASB) Are You not from everlasting, O Lord, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. You, O Lord, have appointed them to judge; And You, O Rock, have established them to correct.

5. Evidence from Isaiah 9

Isaiah 9:6 (NASB) For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
