The Humanity and Deity of Christ (2/2)

3. He possesses omniscience

John 4:16-19  He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.”  (17)  The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’;  (18)  for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.”  (19)  The woman *said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.

Mark 2:8  Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, *said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?

4. He possesses omnipotence

Psalms 19:1-6 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.  (2)  Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge.  (3)  There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard.  (4)  Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their utterances to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun,  (5)  Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber; It rejoices as a strong man to run his course.  (6)  Its rising is from one end of the heavens, And its circuit to the other end of them; And there is nothing hidden from its heat.

Ephesians 1:20-23  He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,  (21)  far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.  (22)  And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,  (23) which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Matthew 28:18 All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Luke 4:40-41, Jesus was at Simon’s mother in-laws house

Hebrews 2:8 YOU HAVE PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET.” For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do notyet see all things subjected to him.

5. He possesses immutability

Hebrews 1:11-12  THEY WILL PERISH, BUT YOU REMAIN; AND THEY ALL WILL BECOME OLD LIKE A GARMENT,  (12)  AND LIKE A MANTLE YOU WILL ROLL THEM UP; LIKE A GARMENT THEY WILL ALSO BE CHANGED. BUT YOU ARE THE SAME, AND YOUR YEARS WILL NOT COME TO AN END.”

6. He possesses life in Himself

Acts 17:28 (NASB) for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His children.’

Genesis 2:4-7 (NASB) 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven. 5 Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. 6 But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

John 1:4 (NASB) In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.

Colossians 1:16 (NASB) For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

2. He holds everything together

Hebrews 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power.

Colossians 1:17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

3. He forgives sin

Mark 2:5-10  And Jesus seeing their faith *said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”  (6)  But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts,  (7)  “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?”  (8) Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, *said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?  (9)  “Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’?  (10)  “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”–He *said to the paralytic,

4. He will raise the dead and judge them

John 6:39-40  “This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.  (40)  “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

John 5:22-23  “For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,  (23)  so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

Acts 17:31  because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”

5. He receives worship

Deuteronomy 6:13 (NASB) “You shall fear only the Lord your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name.

Deuteronomy 10:20 (NASB) “You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him, and you shall swear by His name.

2 Corinthians 13:14 (NASB) The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

c. Christ has the names and titles of God

  1. He called Himself the Son of God

John 10:36 (NASB) do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

Matthew 26:63-64 (NASB) 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, “I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.”  64 Jesus said* to him, “You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see The Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power  , and coming on the clouds of heaven

Matthew 26:65 (NASB) Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy;

2. He is called Lord and God

John 20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

John 20:29 Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

3. He is called King of Kings and Lord of Lords

1 Timothy 6:13-15 (NASB) 13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate,  14 that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,  15 which He will bring about at the proper time—He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,

d. Christ Himself claimed to be God

John 10:30-33 (NASB) 30 “I and the Father are one.”  31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him.  32 Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?”  33 The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.”

John 8:56-59 (NASB) 56 “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” 59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
