I. The perversion of religious Babylon
Nahum 3:1 (NASB) Woe to the bloody city, completely full of lies andpillage; Herprey never departs. 4 (NASB) Allbecause of the many harlotries of the harlot, The charming one, the mistress of sorceries, Who sells nations by her harlotries And families by her sorceries.
Isaiah 1:21 (NASB) How the faithful city has become a harlot, She whowas full of justice! Righteousness once lodged in her, But now murderers.
“All the harlot city societies mentioned in Scriptures have certain common characteristics that are also reflected in John’s description of the great Babylon in which he merges the descriptions of ancient Babylonian and Jerusalem into one composite.”
II. The power of religious Babylon
Revelation 13:1 (NASB) And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns wereten diadems, and on his heads wereblasphemous names.
III. The prosperity of religious Babylon
Jeremiah 51:7 Babylon has been a golden cup in the hand of the Lord, Intoxicating all the earth. The nations have drunk of her wine; Therefore the nations are going mad.
IV. The predecessor of religious Babylon
In our day the ecumenical church has faced a lot of problems. It seems that they have recognized psychological differences in people and that it is impossible to water down theologies and practices to suit everyone. So, each group will come into this great world ecumenical system but retain some of its peculiarities. For example, those who want to immerse will immerse. Those who want to sprinkle will sprinkle. Those who want elaborate ritual will have it, and those who want no ritual will have that. You see, there is going to be more than the mother harlot—there will be a whole lot of harlots, a regular brothel.
V. The persecution of the harlot
Leviticus 18:22 (NASB) ‘You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.
Proverbs 6:16-19 (NASB)16 There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, 19 A false witness whoutters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
Ezekiel 6:9 (NASB) “Then those of you who escape will remember Me among the nations to which they will be carried captive, how I have been hurt by their adulterous hearts which turned away from Me, and by their eyes which played the harlot after their idols; and they will loathe themselves in their own sight for the evils which they have committed, for all their abominations.
1 Timothy 4:1 (NASB) But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith…
Matthew 24:10-11 (NASB)10 “At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another. 11 “Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many.
