The Bottomless Pit is Open – Revelation 9:1-12

Ezekiel 33:11 (NASB) “Say to them, ‘As I live!’ declares the Lord God, ‘I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways!

I. THE FALLEN STAR INTRODUCED

Revelation 6:13 (NASB) and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind.

Revelation 8:8 (NASB) The second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood,

Revelation 8:11 (NASB) The name of the star is called Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the waters, because they were made bitter.

a. The star is an angel

b. The star is a fallen angel

Revelation 9:1 (KJV) And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

II. THE BOTTOMLESS PIT IS OPENED

a. The abyss is a bottomless place

Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV) For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

John 10:10 (NASB) “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

2 Peter 2:4 (NASB) For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;

Matthew 8:29 (NASB) And they cried out, saying, “What business do we have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”

Luke 8:31-32 (NASB) 31 They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into the abyss. 32 … and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the swine. And He gave them permission.

b. The abyss is a dark place

Matthew 13:42, 50 (NASB) and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth…and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

III. THE DEMONIC PLAGUE IS RELEASED

a. These demons are uncountable

Joel 2:25 (NASB) “Then I will make up to you for the years That the swarming locust has eaten, the creeping locust, the stripping locust and the gnawing locust, my great army which I sent among you.

Exodus 10:15 (NASB) For they covered the surface of the whole land, so that the land was darkened; and they ate every plant of the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left. Thus nothing green was left on tree or plant of the field through all the land of Egypt.

b. These demons are unquenchable

Revelation 7:1-3 (NASB) 1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, so that no wind would blow on the earth or on the sea or on any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, having the seal of the living God; and he cried out with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees until we have sealed the bond-servants of our God on their foreheads.”

c. These demons are unrelenting

d. These demons are unmerciful

e. These demons are undefeatable

f. These demons are undividable

Proverbs 30:27 (NASB) The locusts have no king, yet all of them go out in ranks;
