a. They held to the teaching of Balaam
Numbers 22:12 (NASB) God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.”
Numbers 31:16 (NASB) “Behold, these caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, so the plague was among the congregation of the Lord. “The doctrine of Balaam therefore was the teaching that the people of God should intermarry with the heathen and compromise in the matter of idolatrous worship…. Undoubtedly intermarriage with the heathen and spiritual compromise were real issues in Pergamum …”
2 Corinthians 6:14-15 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? (15) Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?
