Family Focus Our Adoption into God’s Family – Romans 8:14-17
I. WE ARE PART OF GOD’S FAMILY THROUGH ADOPTION
The giving to any one the name and place and privileges of a son who is not a son by birth Adoption is one man, taking the son or daughter of another man to be his own son or daughter; thus giving him or her, the same legal position, advantages and privileges as a son or daughter by birth.
II. ADOPTION INTO GOD’S FAMILY BRINGS THE HOLY SPIRIT’S LEADING
Galatians 5:16 (NASB) But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
Galatians 5:17 (NASB) For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
Galatians 5:18 (NASB) But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
Ephesians 5:18 (NASB) And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
III. ADOPTION INTO GOD’S FAMILY BRINGS THE FATHER’S LOVE
IV. WHEN WE ARE ADOPTED WE RECEIVE ASSURANCE BY THE SPIRIT
V. WHEN WE ARE ADOPTED BY GOD WE BECOME HIS HEIRS
1 Peter 1:3-4 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,
a. We get the down payment at salvation
Ephesians 1:13-14 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
b. We get daily installments
Philippians 4:19 (NASB) And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
c. We will get our full insurance in the future
1 Peter 4:13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. Just as surely as we share His sufferings now, we will share His glory in the future
VI. OUR RESPONSE TO ADOPTION BY GOD
a. We need to glorify and honor our heavenly father
b. We need to love our brothers and sisters
c. We need to do our part in the family
Galatians 6:10 So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.
