Moving from Thanksgiving to Thanksliving (1 Thessalonians 5; James 1)

Hebrews 13:15 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.

I. Why should we be thankful?

a. It is commanded in Scripture

Psalms 100:4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving AndHis courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name.

Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.

Colossians 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, doall in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

b. It is characteristic for those in Christ Jesus

Philippians 2:13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

c. It is to be reflected in everything we do

d. It leads to dangerous consequences when we are thankless

Romans 1:21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Hebrews 12:15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;

Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

2 Corinthians 4:15  For all things are for your sakes, so that the grace which is spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to abound to the glory of God.

2. The results of a thankful life

a. We will be able to give thanks even in trials

b. We will be able to rejoice and pray more

Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. 17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Colossians 2:6-7  Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, (7)  having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

3. The barriers to true thankfulness

a. Impatience

b. Negativity

c. Rebellion

Philippians 2:13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
