How to Have a Rock Solid Faith (Psalm 1:1-3)

I. The actions of the righteous?

                        a. They avoid certain things

                                    1. The counsel of the wicked

1 Kings 12:8 But he forsook the counsel of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who grew up with him and served him.

                                    2. The path of sinners

                                    3. The seat of scoffers

                        b. They practice certain things

                                    1. They delight in the law

Psalm 119:1 How blessed are those whose way is blameless, Who walk in the law of the Lord.

Psalm 119:55 O Lord, I remember Your name in the night, And keep Your law.

Psalm 119:97 O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.

Romans 7:16 But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good.

Romans 7:22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man,

Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.

Matthew 23:23-29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. 24 “You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.

                                    2. They meditate on the law

Isaiah 31:4 For thus says the Lord to me, “As the lion or the young lion growls over his prey, Against which a band of shepherds is called out, And he will not be terrified at their voice nor disturbed at their noise, So will the Lord of hosts come down to wage war on Mount Zion and on its hill.”

Isaiah 38:14 “Like a swallow, like a crane, so I twitter; I moan like a dove; My eyes look wistfully to the heights; O Lord, I am oppressed, be my security.

Psalm 37:30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, And his tongue speaks justice.

Psalm 71:24 My tongue also will utter Your righteousness all day long; For they are ashamed, for they are humiliated who seek my hurt.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.

Philippians 2:13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

II. The results of the righteous actions

                        a. They will be firmly planted

Psalm 92:12-14 12 The righteous man will flourish like the palm tree, He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon. 13 Planted in the house of the Lord, They will flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They will still yield fruit in old age; They shall be full of sap and very green,

Deuteronomy 8:3 “He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.

                        b. They will yield fruit consistently

Galatians 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law

                        c. They will have good spiritual health

                        d. They will prosper in all things
