His Superiority (Hebrews 1:1-14)

I. THE AUTHOR OF THE EPISTLE

Hebrews 13:18-19 Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a good conscience, desiring to conduct ourselves honorably in all things. 19 And I urge you all the more to do this, so that I may be restored to you the sooner.

II. THE APPEAL OF THE EPISTLE

Psalms 22:16-18 For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 17 I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 18 They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.

Isaiah 53:5-6 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.

Isaiah 53:10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.

Psalms 16:10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.

III. THE TRUTH ABOUT JESUS

a. Jesus is our Savior

b. Jesus is our Sovereign

  1. He is the heir

John 10:36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?

Matthew 26:65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy;

Psalms 2:7-8 “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. 

2. He is the creator

John 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. He is the radiant one

3. He is the radiant one

John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

1 Timothy 6:16 who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

John 14:9 “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

4. He is exactly like the Father

Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

5. He upholds all things

Philippians 1:6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. He made a sacrifice

7. He is currently exalted

a. His exaltation shows His authority

1 Peter 3:22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

b. His exaltation shows His work for sin was done

c. His exaltation is shown when he prays for us

Romans 8:34 Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

c. Jesus is our superior savior

  1. He is superior because of His title
  2. He is superior because He is the promised Son of David
  3. He is superior because He is worshipped

Luke 4:8 “It is written, ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'”

Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

Psalms 89:27 “I also shall make him My firstborn, The highest of the kings of the earth.

4. He is superior because the angels are just servants

5. He is superior because He is God

6. He is superior because He is the eternal creator

7. He is superior because of His position
