Have You Made the Wonderful Discovery of a Spirit Filled life? (Ephesians 5:18)

Have You Made the Wonderful Discovery of a Spirit Filled life? – Ephesians 5:18

John 10:10 I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

I. THREE KINDS OF PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD

a. The natural person

1 Corinthians 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.

b. The Spiritual person

1 Corinthians 2:15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one.

c. The Carnal person

1 Corinthians 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?

  1. Why does a person remain carnal?

(a). They have not had enough time to grow

Hebrews 5:12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.

1 Corinthians 3:2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able,(b)

(b) They are not informed about Christ’s victory over the power of sin

Romans 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Romans 6:12-14 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

(c) They are shortsighted regarding God’s forgiveness

2 Peter 1:9 For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.

1 Peter 1:18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers,

1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price:

1 Corinthians 6:20 therefore glorify God in your body.

(d) They are ignorant about God’s power available for them

John 14:16-17 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth,

John 14:18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

Acts 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

(e) They lack understanding regarding God’s plan for them

John 16:13-14 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

2. What traits characterizes the carnal person?

(a) A Legalistic attitude

(b) Impure behavior

(c) An aimless life

II. CONDITIONS FOR BEING FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

a. We should not grieve the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Romans 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.

b. We should not quench the Holy Spirit

1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit;

Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

c. We should walk by the Spirit

Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

Colossians 2:6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,

d. We must sow to the Holy Spirit

Galatians 6:8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

1 Peter 1:23 for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God.

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you,

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

III.  WE CAN APPROPRIATE THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT RIGHT NOW

a. Sincerely desire to be directed and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

b. By faith, claim the fullness of the Holy spirit.

Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,

c. Claim God’s Promise that He will always answer when we pray according to His will.

1 John 5:14-15 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
