God’s Vision for Our Church Life – Part 2 (Philippians 2:1-2)

I. We should be unified because Christ desires it

 (ESV) “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,

(KJV) Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

1 Corinthians 1:10  Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Ephesians 4:1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2  with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, 3  being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

II. We should be unified because of the Lord

III. We should be unified because of our love

John 15:12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

Colossians 3:12  So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

IV. We should be unified because of our fellowship

Ephesians 4:3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Ephesians 4:4  There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;

Galatians 5:15 (NASB) But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.

V. We should be unified because we have work to do

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

VI. We should be unified because it defeats our enemy

1 Peter 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

“I have never yet known the Spirit of God to work where the Lord’s people were divided.”
