God’s Vision for Our Church Life (1 Peter 4:7-10)

Matthew 24:1-3 Jesus came out from the temple and was going away when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him.  (2)  And He said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”  (3)  As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

Acts 1:6-8 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”  (7)  He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;  (8)  but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

Luke 12:35-40 “Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit. (36)  “Be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks. (40)  “You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.”

I. We are to be looking for His coming

a. We are to look sensibly

Matthew 25:13 “Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour.

Acts 1:7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;

b. We are to look soberly

2 Thessalonians 1:7-8  when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, (8)  dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

2 Peter 3:10-11 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.  (11)  Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,

c. We are to look with supplication

Matthew 26:41 “Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Ephesians 6:18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

Colossians 4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;

II. We are to be loving before His coming

Mark 13:12-13 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. (13) “You will be hated by all because of My name, but the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.

2 Timothy 3:1-3 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come.  (2)  For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,  (3) unloving

a. We are to have a love that is fervent

John 13:35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

b. We are to have a love that is forgiving

Proverbs 10:12  Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all transgressions.

1 Corinthians 13:4-6 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,  (5) does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,  (6)  does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;

Proverbs 17:9  He who conceals a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends.

Matthew 18:15-16 “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.

c. We are to have a love that is friendly

III. We are to be laboring when he comes

a. We are to know our gifts

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware.

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant.

b. We are to use our gifts
