God’s Call to Holiness (1 Peter 1:13-17)

John 17:15 (NASB) “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.

Philippians 2:15 (NASB) so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world,

I. WE SHOULD BE HOLY BECAUSE WE EXPECT HIS COMING

1 John 3:2-3 (NASB) 2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Matthew 24:42-44 (NASB) 42 “Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. 43 “But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 44 “For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.

a. We should think carefully

Exodus 12:11 (NASB) ‘Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the Lord’s Passover.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NASB) 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

b. We must think soberly

c. We must think hopefully

II. WE SHOULD BE HOLY BECAUSE WE ASSOCIATE WITH HIS CHARACTER

a. We are not to be ignorant

1 Corinthians 2:14 (NASB) But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.

b. We are to be obedient

Although we become Christians instantaneously by faith in Christ, knowing God and developing faith is a gradual process. There are no shortcuts to maturity. It takes time to be holy. – Erwin W. Lutzer

Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord;
Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word.

Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,
Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.

Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul,
Each thought and each motive beneath His control.

Thus led by His Spirit to fountains of love,
Thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.

Holiness is not something to be received in a meeting; it is a life to be lived and to be lived in detail. – Martyn Lloyd-Jones

III. WE SHOULD BE HOLY BECAUSE WE WILL BE EVALUATED

a. Our judgment will be familial

John 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 5:24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Romans 14:12 So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

b. Our judgment will be fair

c. Our judgment will be fearful

Hebrews 12:5-8 “MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD, NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM; (6) FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES.” (7) It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? (8) But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.

A holy life will make the deepest impression. Lighthouses blow no horns, they just shine. – Dwight L. Moody
