God: One in Essence, Three in Person (Isaiah 46:5-11)

I. GOD IS ONE

A. Metaphysical Attributes (intrinsic to His nature)

  1. Pure Act (Pure Existence)

Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

2. Simple

Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!

3. Self-existent (Aseity) / Necessary

Acts 17:25 nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things;

John 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

4. Eternal / Infinite

Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were born
Or You gave birth to the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

Job 11:7-9 “Can you discover the depths of God?Can you discover the limits of the Almighty? 8 “They are high as the heavens, what can you do?
Deeper than Sheol, what can you know? 9 “Its measure is longer than the earth. And broader than the sea.

5. Immaterial / Immense

John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

6. All-Powerful (Omnipotent)

Jeremiah 32:17 ‘Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You,

7. All-Knowing (Omniscient)

Psalm 147:5 Great is our Lord and abundant in strength;
His understanding is infinite.

8. All-Wise (Omnisapient)

Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!

9. Majesty / Beauty / Light

Psalm 27:4 One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord
And to meditate in His temple.

1 Timothy 6:16 who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

10. Life / Immortality

11. Unchangeable (Immutable)

Malachi 3:6 “For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

1 Samuel 15:29 Also the Glory of Israel will not lie or change His mind; for He is not a man that He should change His mind.”

Numbers 23:19 “God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent;
Has He said, and will He not do it?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

Exodus 32:14 So the Lord changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people.

12. Impassible (without emotions or suffering)

Job 22:2-3 “Can a vigorous man be of use to God,
Or a wise man be useful to himself?
3 “Is there any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, Or profit if you make your ways perfect?

Psalm 16:11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

B. Metaphysical characteristics (because of His relation to creation)

  1. All Present (Omnipresent)

Psalm 139:7-8 Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.

Acts 17:28a for in Him we live and move and exist,

2. Transcendent & Immanent

1 Kings 8:27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built!

Jeremiah 23:23-24 “Am I a God who is near,” declares the Lord,
“And not a God far off? 24 “Can a man hide himself in hiding places
So I do not see him?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the Lord.

3. Sovereign

Daniel 2:21 “It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding.

4. Ineffable (incapable of being expressed)

C. Moral attributes (intrinsic to His Nature)

  1. Truth

Hebrews 6:17-18 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us

2. Holy / Just / Perfect

Exodus 15:11“Who is like You among the gods, O LORD?
Who is like You, majestic in holiness,
Awesome in praises, working wonders?

Leviticus 11:45 For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.’”

Deuteronomy 32:4 “The Rock! His work is perfect,
For all His ways are just;
A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and upright is He.

3. Jealous

Deuteronomy 4:24 “For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

4. Goodness/omnibenevolent (love)

1 John 4:8-10 The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

D. Moral Activities (because of His relation to Creation)

  1. Mercy

Psalm 86:5 For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive,
And abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You
.

2. Wrath

John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

II. GOD IS TRIUNE

A. The Ontological Trinity (The Trinity in Itself)

  1. The Father generates the Son and sends the Spirit

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

2. The Son is begotten from the Father

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth

3. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son

John 15:26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,

B. The Economic Trinity (Activities of the Trinity in Salvation)

  1. The Father plans salvation

John 6:37-40 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.

2. The Son accomplishes salvation

John 19:30b He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

3. The Holy Spirit applies salvation

John 16:7-8 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
