Ephesians 4; 1 Peter 4; Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12-14

 I. WHAT IS MEANT BY A SPIRITUAL GIFT

Spiritual gifts are special abilities given by the triune God to every Christian according to God’s grace. They are given according to God’s sovereign will for the primary purpose of serving the body of Christ.

1 Pet. 4:11 Whoever speaks, let him speak as it were the utterances of God; whoever serves, let him do so as by the strength which God supplies. a. Spiritual gifts are given by the triune God

Rom. 12:3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

1 Cor. 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

II. WHAT IS NOT MEANT BY A SPIRITUAL GIFT

a. A spiritual gift must be distinguished from a natural talent

b. Natural talents are how we express God’s common Grace to all men

Matt. 5:45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

c. Natural talents are often transformed by a spiritual gift

d. A spiritual gift is to be distinguished from an office one might hold.

e. A spiritual gift must be distinguished from the arena it’s used

f. A spiritual gift must be distinguished from the method used

III. WHAT ARE SOME COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS?

a. Is the gift of the spirit the same as a spiritual gift?

b. Does the word gift in scripture always refer to a spiritual gift?

Rom. 5:15-16 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. (16) The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification.

Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Phil. 4:17 Not that I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what may be credited to your account.

c. Is a spiritual gift the same as the fruit of the spirit?

Gal.5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

d. How many spiritual gifts does a Christian have?

1 Pet. 4:10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

Acts 3:6 But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene–walk!”

(3) “Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. (4) “But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
