Discerning God’s Will for Our Lives (Romans 12:1-2)

Acts 9:5-6 (NASB) 5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, 6 but get up and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do.”

Acts 9:15-16 (NASB) 15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; 16 for I will show him how much he must suffer for My name’s sake.”

Presentation – Conformation + Transformation = Realization

I. DISCOVERING THE WILL OF GOD?

a. There is the sovereign will of God

Matthew 26:39 (NASB) And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”

b. There is the perfect will of God

Jeremiah 29:11 (NASB) ‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.

1 Thessalonians 4:3 (NASB) For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NASB) in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

c. There is the moral will of God

d. There is the permissive will of God

e. There is the specific will of God

II. DISCOVERING GOD’s WILL REQUIRES A PRESENTATION

Romans 5:1 (NASB) Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Romans 8:1 (NASB) Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

a. Our presentation is voluntary

b. Our presentation is living

Romans 6:13 (NASB) and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

c. The presentation is to be holy

d. The presentation is to be acceptable

e. The presentation is a spiritual one

f. The presentation is a worshipful one

III. DISCOVERING GOD’S WILL REQUIRES A TRANSFORMATION

a. We are not to be shaped

Fortune
Fame
Power
Pleasure

b. We are to be re-shaped

c. We are to be renewed

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

IV. DISCOVERING GOD’S WILL RESULTS IN A REALIZATION

Presentation – Conformation + Transformation = Realization

a. We discover God’s will is good

Romans 8:28 (NASB) 28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

Genesis 50:20 (NASB) “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.

b. We discover God’s will is acceptable

1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.

c. We discover God’s will is perfect

Esther 4:14 “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”

V. DISCOVERING GOD’S WILL INVOLVES PERSPIRATION

a. We must read our Bibles

Psalms 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

Psalms 119:9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word.

Psalms 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

Joshua 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.

b. We must pray often

James 1:5 (NASB) But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Psalms 143:8 Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning; For I trust in You; Teach me the way in which I should walk; For to You I lift up my soul.

Psalms 25:5 Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; For You I wait all the day.

c. We must listen to the Holy Spirit

John 16:13 13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

Isaiah 58:11 the Lord will continually guide you,

Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

1 Peter 5:7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.

d. We must feed the root

Matthew 12:34-36 (NASB) 34 “You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. 35 “The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil. 36 “But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.

Matthew 12:33 (NASB) “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.

e. We must think about it

f. We must recognize God’s voice

John 10:27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
