Can Christians Commit the Unpardonable Sin? – Matthew 12:20-32

I. WHAT IS THE UNPARDONABLE SIN?

a. Is it a moral sin?

b. Is it an intellectual sin?

c. It is a verbal sin

Deuteronomy 5:11 (NASB) 11 ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

Luke 4:1 (NASB) Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness

John 3:34 (NASB) “For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure.

Luke 4:14 (NASB) 14 And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district.

Acts 10:38 (NASB) 38 “You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

Luke 4:18 (NASB) “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed,

II. WHY IS THIS SIN UNPARDONABLE?

a. This sin insults the Holy Spirit

b. This sin is a rejection of the truth

2 Thessalonians 2:8-11 (NASB) Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; 9 that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, 10 and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. 11 For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false,

2 Thessalonians 2:12 (NASB) 12 in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.

c. This sin is ignoring the light of the world

John 12:35 (NASB) So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.

John 12:36 (NASB) “While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.” These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them.

John 12:37 (NASB) But though He had performed so many signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him.

John 12:39 (NASB) 39 For this reason they could not believe

III. WHO CAN COMMIT THE UNPARDONABLE SIN?

a. Unbelievers can commit the unpardonable sin

John 16:8 (NASB) 8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

Hebrews 11:6 (NASB) 6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

Acts 16:30-31 (NASB) Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved

John 3:16 (NASB) 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

John 14:6 (NASB) 6 Jesus said* to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

John 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

b. Believers cannot commit the unpardonable sin

John 3:16 (NASB) 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

John 3:17 (NASB) 17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. Romans 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

John 3:16 (NASB) 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

John 5:24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

1 John 1:9 (NASB) 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

John 10:27-28 (NASB) 27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

1 John 5:11-13 11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Romans 8:35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
