A Peek Into Heaven – Revelation 4:1-11

Revelation 1:19 (NASB) “Therefore write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after these things.

I. THE PERSON ON THE THRONE

Isaiah 6:1 (NASB) In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple.

1 Kings 22:19 (NASB) Micaiah said, “Therefore, hear the word of the Lord. I saw the Lord sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing by Him on His right and on His left.

Psalms 47:8 (NASB) God reigns over the nations, God sits on His holy throne.

a. The Father’s government

Psalms 103:19 (NASB) The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, And His sovereignty rules over all.

Isaiah 66:1 (NASB) Thus says the Lord, “Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.

b. The Father’s glory

1 Timothy 6:16 (NASB) who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see.

Exodus 33:20 (NASB) But He said, “You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!”

Revelation 21:11 (NASB) having the glory of God. Her brilliance was like a very costly stone, as a stone of crystal-clear jasper.

Romans 5:8 (NASB) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

c. The Father’s grace

Ezekiel 1:28 (NASB) As the appearance of the rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the surrounding radiance. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice speaking.

II. THE PEOPLE BEFORE THE THRONE

a. The elders of the church

Daniel 7:9 (NASB) “I kept looking Until thrones were set up, And the Ancient of Days took His seat; His vesture was like white snow And the hair of His head like pure wool. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire.

2 Timothy 4:8 (NASB) in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.

b. The seven Spirits of God

Exodus 19:18-19 (NASB) 18 Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him with thunder.

c. The four living creatures

Exodus 24:10 (NASB) and they saw the God of Israel; and under His feet there appeared to be a pavement of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself.

Ezekiel 1:22 (NASB) Now over the heads of the living beings there was something like an expanse, like the awesome gleam of crystal, spread out over their heads.

Ezekiel 1:10-11 (NASB) 10 As for the form of their faces, each had the face of a man; all four had the face of a lion on the right and the face of a bull on the left, and all four had the face of an eagle. 11 Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another being, and two covering their bodies.

Ezekiel 10:15 (NASB) Then the cherubim rose up. They are the living beings that I saw by the river Chebar.

Psalms 80:1 (NASB) Oh, give ear, Shepherd of Israel, You who lead Joseph like a flock; You who are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!

Psalms 99:1 (NASB) The Lord reigns, let the peoples tremble; He is enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake!

III. THE PRAISE UNTO THE THRONE

a. The span of the praise

1 Peter 1:16 (NASB) because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Psalms 47:8 (NASB) God reigns over the nations, God sits on His holy throne.

Psalms 27:4 (NASB) One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord And to meditate in His temple.

Psalms 111:9 (NASB) He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name.

b. The source of the praise

Genesis 17:1 (NASB) Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless.

Matthew 19:26 (NASB) And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Psalms 115:3 (NASB) But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.

Daniel 4:35 (NASB) “All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, But He does according to His will in the host of heaven And among the inhabitants of earth; And no one can ward off His hand Or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’

Isaiah 46:10 (NASB) Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;

Psalms 33:9 (NASB) For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

1 Corinthians 9:24-25 24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.

1 Thessalonians 2:18-19 For we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, more than once—and yet Satan hindered us. 19 For who is our hope or joy or crown of exultation? Is it not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming?

Revelation 2:10 ‘Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Jas 1:12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

2 Timothy 4:7-8 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; 8 in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.

1 Peter 5:1-4 Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, 2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

c. The sounds of praise
