Christian Love – 1 John 4:7-12
I. THE CHRISTIAN’S CALL TO LOVE (v.7-8)
1 John 3:11—11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,
1 John 3:23— And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
John 13:34-35—34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
a. Because love is from God (v. 7)
b. Because love is a hallmark of true belief (v.7b-8a)
c. Because God is love (v.8b)
1 John 1:5—5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
II. THE CHRISTIAN’S EXAMPLE OF LOVE (v.8-11)
a. Christ’s humble sending (v.9)
John 3:16—For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
b. Christ’s sacrificial payment (v.10)
Romans 3:21-26—21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Romans 6:23—For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 5:6-9—6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
c. Christ’s perfect example (v.11)
Ephesians 5:1-2—Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
III. THE CHRISTIAN’S TESTIMONY OF LOVE (v.12)
a. Our love demonstrates God’s character (v.12a)
b. Our love stems from God’s love (v.12b)
